Tash Porteous, Situation Sorted

Can you give us a brief introduction to your business, Situation Sorted?

Situation Sorted is a professional organising business located on the beautiful Northern Beaches of Sydney. I help time poor individuals/families tackle tasks on their to do list that they can’t manage to do themselves.

What inspired you to start Situation Sorted? Was there a specific problem or need in the market that you wanted to address?

I had always dreamed of starting my own organising business but was waiting for the right time. During Covid lockdown, I noticed that many families were struggling to get the balance right between home schooling and work commitments. It was complete chaos and any routines or structure that had previously supported families, fell by the wayside. As restrictions lifted, I recognised that this was the time to start helping people get back on track and Situation Sorted was born.

What is your career background?

I completed my studies as a PE Teacher and after an ankle injury whilst teaching in Canada, I found myself back in Australia using my organisational skills in athlete management and the events industry. My last role, before starting Situation Sorted, was with a speakers’ bureau overseeing national and international events, coordinating travel as well as managing the professional speaking diaries for several high-profile personalities.

Tell us about the services you offer and how they can be adapted to suit your different clients’ needs?

I am available to help individuals/families with their to-do lists including decluttering and organising spaces around the home, assistance with moving house logistics, clearing deceased estates, preparing for sale, life admin and diary management, meeting trades on site in the client’s absence etc.

Every family is unique and will require different services based on their individual circumstances.

What does a typical day look like when you are helping clients?

No two days are ever the same. My services are so varied, and each job is tailored to my specific client’s needs. This past week, I have packed down a rental property in Narrabeen, so the interstate owners didn’t have to come back, helped a client in Avalon declutter and prepare their family home for sale and I even had a booking all the way from New York City for a client that needed something taken care of their property in Newport. It’s never dull.

Do you have any organisational advice, hacks, or tips you can share?

I always tell my clients that “Your day starts the night before and your week starts the weekend before”. Use this time wisely to get things organised. You don’t want to spend time & energy every morning looking for your keys, thinking about what to eat or wondering what to wear. Lay your clothes out the night before, plan your meals for the week and put your keys on a hook so you’re ready to go. Being organised is the best gift you can give yourself.

Where do you see Situation Sorted in five years’ time?

I am passionate about helping people, so I trust I will continue to make a positive difference in the lives of busy families. I hope to have a small team of organisers that can offer assistance and practical advice to help families, so they run smoothly, like having a personal assistant for your home/life.

Is there anything else you would like to add or highlight about your small business that we haven’t covered?

Just to say thank you, because when you support a small business, you are supporting a dream. I am grateful every day that I took that giant leap of faith and am following my dreams. Loving what you do and helping people makes me happy.

Tell us about your connection to Cunninghams

I sold my previous family home with Cunninghams back in 2018. Matt Lemon was such a great support during the entire process. Matt was always available to help guide me and answer any questions I had. I never felt like it was just about the sale. He made sure I was looked after even after the settlement, and I remain in contact all these years later.
